Vitalik Buterin urges Ethereum to build “sanctuary technologies” beyond finance

Vitalik Buterin continues to make waves in the crypto community with his proposals for a significant advancement of Ethereum. Today, Buterin urged the network to expand its mission beyond decentralized finance, advocating for the development of what he described as “sanctuary technologies.” He linked this push to a broader philosophy of “de-totalization,” which aims to prevent any single actor from achieving overwhelming control over digital systems.

The proposal redefines Ethereum as an infrastructure not only for financial primitives but also for tools that protect privacy, freedom, and coordination against the growing pressures of centralization.

What Vitalik Buterin proposed and why it matters

The Ethereum co-founder once again used his X account (formerly Twitter) to suggest that Ethereum should explicitly prioritize systems designed to resist censorship and the concentration of power. He used the term “de-totalization” to describe an architecture that makes unilateral control both economically and technically more expensive. Under this concept, “sanctuary technologies” are open-source, permissionless primitives designed to preserve digital freedoms and enduring coordination mechanisms.

He framed the shift as a strategic complement to DeFi, rather than a replacement. In his own words, “Optimize payments, defi, decentralized social, and other applications precisely for those users, and those goals, which centralized tech will not serve. We have many allies, including many outside of “crypto“.

The increase in funding and the development of privacy tools appears to be the new prevailing narrative in the crypto world. With projects like Monero and Zcash once again capturing market attention, Ethereum will seek to reposition itself as a decentralized and private network.

In this regard, Buterin called for deepening Ethereum’s role as a communication channel between multiple platforms.

Ethereum’s role is to create “digital space” where different entities can cooperate and interact. Communications channels enable interaction, but communication channels are not “space”: they do not let you create single unique objects that canonically represent some social arrangement that changes over time. Money is one important example. Multisigs that can change their members, showing persistence exceeding that of any one person or one public key, are another. Various market and governance structures are a third. There are more.”
