The popular meme-inspired cryptocurrency dogecoin (DOGE) is set to make history by becoming the first physical coin to land on the moon. A team of dogecoin developers announced on Twitter that a dogecoin token will be sent to the lunar surface in a space mission planned by Astrobotic, a Pittsburgh-based company that provides lunar payload delivery services.
The dogecoin token will be carried in a DHL MoonBox, a small container that allows anyone to send personal items to the moon for a fee. The MoonBox will be launched on a Vulcan Centaur rocket operated by United Launch Alliance (ULA) on Dec. 23, 2023. The mission, dubbed Peregrine Mission One (PM1), will carry 21 payloads from various governments, companies, universities, and NASA.

The dogecoin project was funded by the community in 2015 when dogecoin enthusiasts raised over $50,000 to sponsor a lunar payload. The project was initially scheduled for 2016 but was delayed due to technical and regulatory challenges. The developers said the mission embodies the collective effort and spirit of the Dogecoin community.
Dogecoin Will Join Bitcoin in a Journey to the Moon
Dogecoin is not the only cryptocurrency that will reach the moon this year. PM1 will also carry a physical Bitcoin token and a copy of the Genesis Block, the first block of Bitcoin to be mined, commissioned by Bitcoin Magazine and crypto exchange BitMEX. The Bitcoin token will be engraved with the famous phrase “To the Moon” and the names of the mission sponsors.
The coin, which features the image of a Shiba Inu dog as its logo, has a market capitalization of over $10 billion and a price of $0.07931 as of Nov. 16, 2023. The coin’s slogan is “Dogecoin to the moon”, which refers to its potential to reach astronomical heights.
The dogecoin community hopes that the lunar landing will boost the coin’s popularity and adoption, as well as inspire future space exploration and innovation. The developers said they are proud to be part of the historic mission and thanked Astrobotic, ULA, and DHL for their support. They also invited other Dogecoin fans to join them in celebrating the achievement and watching the launch live.
