Indonesian university issues free blockchain records to students

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) is now issuing all diplomas and academic transcripts on a public blockchain at no cost to its graduates, partnering with the startup ChainSmart. This initiative aims to eliminate document forgery and allow employers to verify academic results instantly, without the need for physical paperwork. For companies and other universities, this provides a modern and reliable method to store and inspect degree credentials.

Context and Impact of Blockchain Records

This move places UNS within a broader Indonesian pilot program where several universities are testing verifiable digital credentials. A core feature of this system is the immutability it provides; once data is recorded on the blockchain, it becomes unchangeable.

The potential impact is significant. A 2023 IBM study cited in the report indicates that storing student records on a blockchain can reduce credential fraud by up to 90%. The ChainSmart platform also offers additional benefits, such as reducing the administrative burden on university staff and giving graduates full control to grant access to their credentials for selected recruiters.

Implications and Future Outlook

The success of UNS’s implementation could serve as a model for wider adoption. If the university demonstrates smooth day-to-day operations, other institutions are more likely to follow suit. The projected reduction in fake degrees and the simplification of verification checks are powerful incentives.

However, the initiative is not without its challenges. Potential bottlenecks in system speed and difficulties with cross-platform compatibility pose technical risks that could hinder the project’s benefits. Furthermore, the absence of clear regulations for blockchain-based credentials is a notable hurdle. Future government policies will ultimately determine how widely this model can be adopted.

The UNS launch is presented as Indonesia’s first full-scale blockchain for credentials, acting as a live test for other universities. The next critical measure will be the system’s performance under real-world load. Its success or failure will guide future rollouts and potentially shape upcoming legal frameworks for digital academic records.
