Metaplanet Issues 2 Billion JPY in Bonds to Expand Bitcoin Holdings

TL;DR

  • Metaplanet issued 2 billion JPY in zero-interest bonds to acquire more Bitcoin.

  • The company aims to hold 10,000 BTC by Q4 2025 and 21,000 BTC by the end of 2026.

  • New performance indicators provide greater transparency in Bitcoin-related financial strategies.

Metaplanet has issued another 2 billion JPY in zero-interest ordinary bonds to expand its Bitcoin holdings. The bonds, each valued at 50 million JPY, will mature on August 26, 2025. The company plans to use the proceeds to purchase additional Bitcoin, aligning with its previously announced financial strategy.

The issuance follows a structured approach, with the investment manager EVO Fund backing the funds. Metaplanet has also outlined that repayment will be covered through stock acquisition rights from previously authorized series.

The firm’s objective is to accumulate 10,000 BTC by the fourth quarter of 2025 and 21,000 BTC by the end of 2026. At current market prices, this would amount to nearly $2 billion in digital assets. The company cites Japan’s economic challenges, including prolonged negative interest rates and a weakening yen, as key factors influencing its Bitcoin acquisition strategy. By shifting a portion of its reserves into Bitcoin, Metaplanet seeks a hedge against currency depreciation and economic instability.

Metaplanet Expands Its Bitcoin Strategy

As of January 28, the company held approximately 1,726 BTC. Recent adjustments have slightly reduced the yen allocated for Bitcoin purchases from 111.3 billion to 107.3 billion JPY. Despite this minor reduction, Metaplanet continues to increase its Bitcoin exposure, signaling a long-term commitment to digital asset accumulation.

The company’s stock has surged 2,127% over the past year, with a market capitalization increase exceeding 7,000%. This rapid growth coincides with a 500% rise in the number of shareholders, adding 50,000 new investors. The strategy closely mirrors MicroStrategy’s approach, which has also centered on large-scale Bitcoin acquisitions as a corporate treasury asset.

To enhance financial transparency, Metaplanet has introduced two new performance indicators: BTC Gain and BTC Yen Gain. These metrics complement the existing BTC Yield KPI and aim to provide shareholders with deeper insight into capital allocation efficiency.
