Zcash drops 17–25% after four-year peak as short bets rise and squeeze risk looms

Zcash (ZEC) is currently navigating a turbulent phase, caught between a powerful recent rally fueled by a privacy resurgence and a sharp correction that has set the stage for potential high volatility. The interplay of technical levels and market leverage is creating a tense environment for traders.

A Sharp Correction After a Stellar Rally

Zcash recently experienced a dramatic surge, catapulting to touch $300 for the first time since 2018—a move that represented a staggering 260% gain in just a few weeks and a 520% jump over the past month. This explosive growth was part of a broader renaissance for privacy-focused cryptocurrencies, pushing the sector’s market capitalization to $13 billion.

However, this upward trajectory hit a wall. After peaking, ZEC underwent a significant correction, falling between 17% and 25% to trade below $225. This pullback is a critical test for the bullish trend. Technically, the price is now consolidating, and a key level to watch is $255. A decisive break above this resistance could confirm the resumption of the uptrend.

The Looming Threat of a Short Squeeze

Beneath the surface of this price action, derivatives market data reveals a situation ripe for a potential short squeeze. The recent run-up already wiped out approximately $50 million in short positions, and the market structure continues to favor a squeeze.

Currently, there is a significant imbalance in leverage. Data shows more than $16.4 million in short leverage positioned against only about $5.2 million in long leverage. This means a large number of traders are betting on the price going down. If the price of ZEC begins to rise instead and breaks above key levels like $255, these short sellers could be forced to buy back ZEC to close their positions and limit losses. This forced buying would add fuel to the upward move, potentially creating a feedback loop that rapidly drives the price higher.

Background and privacy case

The fundamental driver behind Zcash’s resurgence is a renewed market interest in its core value proposition: financial privacy. As a pioneer in this space, Zcash uses advanced cryptographic technology called zk-SNARKs. This allows transactions to be verified on the blockchain without revealing sensitive information about the sender, receiver, or transaction amount.

In a climate of increasing regulatory scrutiny and global surveillance, this utility is attracting investors seeking anonymity, leading to a rotation of capital into Zcash and other privacy coins. This strong foundational narrative provides the underlying strength that can fuel sustained price movements and differentiate Zcash from purely speculative assets.
